Five Spice Powder is an ingredient used in Chinese and Asian cooking. It's possible to buy Chinese Five Spice Powder from most Asian supermarkets, but making it yourself is easy and has the added benefit of ensuring you get a full fresh flavour as the spices are blended just before cooking.

  1. Add black peppercorns, cloves, star anise pod, cinnamon stick and fennel seeds to a clean small bowl
  2. Place a clean frying pan - medium heat
  3. Transfer spices to frying pan while stirring occasionally
  4. Roast in frying pan until browned at edges and let cool - medium heat
  5. Crush with mortar and pestle until well blended
