Sourdough donuts to celebrate sourdough September. The combination of sourdough and baking soda gives these donuts a great texture and flavor. They're yummy on their own, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, or dipped in chocolate glaze (separate recipe).

Step preview

  1. Add grapeseed oil to a clean frying pan
  2. Heat - 180°C, medium-high heat
  3. Add all purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon and salt to a clean medium bowl
  4. Mix briefly then set aside
  5. Add rye sourdough starter, grapeseed oil, egg and buttermilk to a clean large mixing bowl
  6. Whisk until combined
  7. Transfer dry ingredients to mixture
  8. Mix gently until dough forms
  9. Transfer mixture to lightly floured surface
  10. Knead
  11. Roll out
  12. Cut out
  13. Fry
  14. Drain with paper towels
  15. Let cool on round wire rack
