I love this French toast on rainy fall days. Caramel is great in place of maple syrup, and you can substitute the apples for any fruit. I really enjoy it with pears, quince or bananas as well.

Step preview

  1. Slice challah bread into a clean cutting board then set aside
  2. Add sugar to a clean small bowl
  3. Mix in ground cardamom and ground cinnamon to the batter
  4. Add egg, vanilla extract and heavy cream to the batter
  5. Whisk until combined
  6. Add sugar, lemon juice and water to a clean saucepan
  7. Cook until golden brown and turn off heat - medium heat
  8. Add apple to the syrup
  9. Mix in heavy cream to the syrup then set aside
  10. Add butter to a clean frying pan
  11. Melt - medium heat
  12. Dip bread into batter
  13. Add content of cutting board to frying pan
  14. Cook each side until golden brown - medium heat
  15. Drizzle syrup
  16. Serve
