This lentil dal is full of color and flavor. Don't worry about the heat, you can make it as mild or hot as you like. We served ours with quinoa, but it's great with rice or naan bread too. Don't forget to rinse the quinoa thoroughly before cooking with it.

Step preview

  1. Get a clean large saucepan
  2. Add lentils
  3. Add minced ginger
  4. Add ground turmeric
  5. Add onion
  6. Add salt & pepper
  7. Add water
  8. Heat gently until just boiling
  9. Reduce on medium heat until simmering
  10. Cook for 35min until tender
  11. Add lime juice
  12. Simmer for approx 1min while stirring occasionally
  13. Mash briefly with potato masher
  14. Set aside and turn off heat
  15. Get a clean frying pan
  16. Add grapeseed oil
  17. Heat on medium heat
  18. Add cumin seeds
  19. Heat on high heat
  20. Stir for approx 10s
  21. Add minced garlic clove
  22. Cook until light golden
  23. Add minced red bell pepper
  24. Cook for approx 1min until softened and turn off heat
  25. Transfer content of frying pan to large saucepan
  26. Add cayenne pepper
  27. Add chopped cilantro
  28. Serve
