The topping possibilities for churros are endless. Instead of dropping the churros in cinnamon sugar, as we do here, you can drop them in vanilla sugar, slather on a couple spoonfuls of nutella, or dip the ends of each mini churro in melted chocolate.

Step preview

  1. Get a clean saucepan
  2. Add water
  3. Add salted butter
  4. Add sugar
  5. Add lemon zest
  6. Stir on medium heat until just boiling then set aside
  7. Mix in all purpose flour
  8. Stir constantly for approx 1min 30s on medium heat until dough forms
  9. Transfer dough to stand mixer bowl and let cool
  10. Add room temperature egg
  11. Beat for approx 3min on medium speed until smooth
  12. Get a clean frying pan
  13. Add canola oil
  14. Heat and continue
  15. Get a clean small bowl
  16. Add sugar
  17. Add ground cinnamon
  18. Pipe into strips with piping bag
  19. Fry for approx 2min until golden brown
  20. Dip dough into sugar mixture
  21. Serve immediately
