The flavours of these beans are bold and vibrant. The texture is not gritty and mushy like the canned versions, and portion control is much easier using homemade. Yes, it takes more planning and a bit more time, but it is well worth the effort. If you use a slow cooker, most of the time is passive without the need to watch the pot. It can’t get better than that. Note: If using canned navy beans, use 3-4 cans well rinsed and drained.

  1. Get a clean saucepan
  2. Add molasses
  3. Add tomato sauce
  4. Add brown sugar
  5. Add dry mustard
  6. Add salt
  7. Add black pepper
  8. Heat slowly on medium heat until mixture comes together
  9. Add liquid smoke
  10. Get a clean large mixing bowl
  11. Add cooked canned navy beans
  12. Transfer to slow cooker
  13. Add cooked, chopped bacon
  14. Transfer sauce to beans
  15. Cover with water
  16. Cook for approx 4h
  17. Cook for approx 3h
  18. Serve
